Comments: 2 +-   The one-line, no-frills backup solution-> on Saturday August 29, @02:59AM Barence

Submitted by Barence on Saturday August 29, @02:59AM
enlightenment
Barence writes "PC Pro's Darien Graham-Smith has devised a simple but effective back-up solution that requires nothing more than a free Windows Live Mesh account and a line of code in the command line. He uses the 5GB of Windows Live Mesh storage to synchronise and backup his vital work files, and a batch file on the desktop to account for the rest. This snappy command mirrors his user folder to a backup destination on another PC, recursing subdirectories but skipping NTFS junctions, system and hidden files, plus movies, music and VirtualBox disc images, files beginning with "_" (generally superfluous support files) and folders with names that start with "temp". Anyone got a cheaper, easier solution?"

+-   Does powerline networking nuke radio hams?-> on Thursday August 13, @08:46AM Barence

Barence writes "Since writing about the success he's had with powerline networking, a number of readers emailed PC Pro's Paul Ockendon to castigate him for recommending these products, such as HomePlug. They were all amateur radio enthusiasts, claiming the products affect their hobby in much the same way that urban lighting affects amateur astronomers, but rather than causing light pollution they claim powerline networking causes radio pollution in the HF band (otherwise known as shortwave). Paul's follow-up feature, "Does powerline networking nuke radio hams?" documents his investigation into these claims, which found evidence to support both sides of an intriguing debate."

carpenter37 writes "Facebook has acquired FriendFeed, we've learned. We're gathering details now. At this point details on the acquisition are still very sparse, but it's clearly a good match. Over the last year or so, Facebook has "borrowed" quite a few of features that FriendFeed popularized, including the 'Like' feature and an emphasis on real-time news updates."

+-   The Worst U.S. Cities to Work in IT-> on Tuesday June 23, @08:44AM bdcny7927

bdcny7927 writes "IT workers have their choice of many great U.S. cities for work and play (Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle), but what are the cities that you probably should avoid? Here's a very unscientific, highly subjective and unapologetically snarky list of our least favorite U.S. tech job locales."

Comments: 2 +-   Training Geeks to be 'normal' at Geek Heaven-> on Friday May 15 2009, @09:37AM Critical Facilities

Submitted by Critical Facilities on Friday May 15 2009, @09:37AM
education
Critical Facilities writes "Apparently, Neumont University, also referred to as "Geek Heaven" has implemented several programs which attempt to socialize/normalize their admittedly eccentric student body. According to the article, "The 6-year-old school places its graduates in high-tech jobs at such companies as EBay Inc., Microsoft Corp. and IBM Corp. If trends hold up, more than 90% of the 59 students graduating with bachelor's degrees today will find work within three months...Administrators forced them to close their laptops in class, established social clubs and required them to take courses in interpersonal communications and public speaking."

As would be expected, there is a major shortage of women attending this particular university. In typical geek fashion, those women who do attend the school don't appear to be particularly appreciated by their male colleagues as evidenced by a quote from student Cameron Murray who is quoted as saying, "the women at Neumont "are more like dudes with long hair," which hurts the dating scene.""

+-   Prof Spams Computer Clubs Seeking YouTube Hits-> on Monday April 27 2009, @11:48AM jyosim

Submitted by jyosim on Monday April 27 2009, @11:48AM
jyosim writes "A professor in Sacramento recently e-mailed (some would say spammed) student computer clubs at several colleges promising to compose an original song for them if they would score him 1,000 views on his YouTube videos. The professor's videos — which he says are part of an unusual research project — are of him dressed as an aging rockstar singing about viral videos — and in one, he serenades a prostitute in Amsterdam. At least one of the clubs objected to the e-mail, saying the move was insulting and clueless. "We feel that the method used in this 'experiment' lacks the necessary rigor to have any meaning," said an officer for the Computer Science Club at the University of Waterloo, in Ontario in a letter to top officials at Sacramento. "Proper 'viral' media is spread not through e-mail spam and incentive but through word of mouth, and studying 'viral' media by attempting to create artificially 'viral' content is bound to lead to meaningless results." The letter also said the professor had behaved unethically by involving human subjects (like the club members at Waterloo) without approval from the university's institutional review board."

WSJdpatton writes "The collision between two satellites last month has renewed interest in some ideas for cleaning up the cloud of debris circling the earth. Some of the plans being considered: Using aging rockets loaded with water to dislodge the debris from orbit so it will burn up in the atmosphere, junk-zapping lasers and garbage-collecting rockets."

Your articles are always so intriguing, I actually thought your readers might be interested in some really good looking new laptop bags. knomo is based on a simple concept: to create laptop bags people really want to carry, instead of those they just have to tolerate. They're also functional. They have plenty of compartments for storing power cords, gadgets and every day essentials. knomo's are extremely durable [each design is tested by dropping it 2500 times with 33 kgs.of weight]. Each bag contains a well-cushioned laptop compartment, with a shock-proof protective strip along the base and sides and a tracker ID, to help return a lost bag to its owner. knomo bags can be found at www.knomo.com Please let me know if you'd like any images or information! jcrousedotcom writes "Another Computerworld article shows Microsoft's ability to spin. This spin explains away why folks would want to pirate XP over Vista:

That pirates have stuck with XP — which retains the bulk of the Windows operating system's market share — is "very consistent with what we've seen in counterfeiting in the past," said MacNaughton. "There's usually a lag of between one and two years [before they can] figure out how to replicate those antipiracy and security features."

Counterfeiters currently copy Office 2003 rather than the newer Office 2007 for the same reasons, she said."

ozmanjusri writes "Online market share of the dominant Windows operating system has taken its biggest monthly fall in years to drop below 90% market share, according to Net Applications Inc.

Computerworld reports that Microsoft's flagship product has been steadily losing ground to Mac OS X and Linux, and is at its lowest ebb in the market since 1995. The stats show that while some customers are "upgrading" from XP to Vista, many are jumping ship to Apple, while Linux is also steadily gaining ground.

Net Applications' executive vice president of marketing, Vince Vizzaccarro, suggests the slide may be caused by many of the same factors that caused the fall in Internet Explorer use; "The more home users who are online, using Macs and Firefox and Safari, the more those shares go up," he said. November has more weekend days, as well Thanksgiving in the U.S, a result which emphasises the importance of corporate sales to Microsoft Inc."

srini writes "Not every single relationship and marriage will need the help that comes from couples counseling but many more need it then actually attend. This may because of embarrassment, lack of interest in saving the marriage or lack of understanding how couples counseling can really help them. Even if it seems a little silly to you, if saving your relationship is important to you, it is worth giving everything a try so that you will not wonder later if you did everything you could."
