LiteForce writes: "MandrakeSoft are going public on July 30th on the European Stock Exchange. U.S. residents are not currently eligible to take part (only French residents are permitted). This is the IPO (then in progress) mentioned here shortly ago, but now they have the go-ahead; there's also an exchange on Mandrake's discussion forum. Congratulations over there!

Linux won't ever be accepted as a truly mainstream OS by most vendors. The reason for this is quite simply the users. And I'm not talking about everyone, I'm talking about the 31337 h4x0r kids with the bad attitude. They're posting right here on this system, intermixed with others who often share the attitude, but also have a bit more civility. I saw this once again while learning about the Hewlett Packard 3300C flatbad scanner ... which has zippo Linux support from HP. And I don't see that changing. Keep reading and maybe I can explain why.

Patrick Mullen writes: "The Duke of URL has just posted its review of Yellow Dog Linux 2.0 - Linux for the PowerPC. The review covers installation, the interface, YUP (their own apt-like update/install tool), benchmarks of PPC VS. X86 and much more."

Denis Lackovic writes: "we tested kernel 2.4.5 with six filesystems: ext2, ext3, jfs, reiserfs, vfat, and xfs. You can find out the results here." The tests cover a number of situations, on decent but reasonable hardware.

jwunderl writes: "Just a quick word to let you know that Rebel, who took over the NetWinder line from Corel has gone the way of the dodo. Claining a failed partnership with Fuji, the company informed it's creditors it could no longer continue. The full story is available at the Ottawa Citizen's page." Linux appliances don't seem to be the sure-sell that everyone thought they would be.

Note: this is neither necessary nor called for. It's just a symptom of hackers having fun and poking at boundaries. Don't put this on any production servers unless you are very disgruntled.

It includes various improvements which are described on linux today, these primarily consisted of bug fixes and speed ups." Good to see that the effort that went into making Nautilus friendly wasn't wasted. But if you want to browse more than your hard drive, HeUnique points out another interesting project which is not distributed with the official KDE package. It's called: KDENOX ("KDE No X" -- you can use it with X or with framebuffer and QT Embedded: here's a screenshot). The gain? You get Konqueror without KDE, with SSL, cookies, proxy, bookmarks, fonts, and without KDE itself. The executable is small (4MB), doesn't take much RAM, and it works very nicely on low end machines ... (grab it from KDE CVS). LinuxTag started today. Many of the usual exhibitors can be seen, and the floor is quite busy. Especially noteworth is the crowded KDE booth where they are excited about the 2.2 Betas. kazekiri sent us a report from Slashdot/Japan which you'll need to translate to read, but apparently one of the hotels was closed for hygiene reasons, and many of the developers are without a place to sleep. So now they are staying in a gymnasium! Fortunately for me, my hotel is open and I got a good nights sleep (after 36 hours without any) and am preparing for my keynote Saturday afternoon, and a Q&A session Sunday afternoon. If you're in Stuttgart, check it out, just don't try any of that Deutsch on me, I barely passed that class.

sasha328 was among several to submit a story about problems with Chinese Developers allegedly violating licenses by not re-releasing their mods to various open source projects. There's not a lot of evidence presented, but a lot of points made without telling us what code and what license. But I'm sure we'll see more of this in the future.

If the prospect of fireworks wasn't enough to make you happy today, there's a new Linux kernel in town. (Note: be patient; some of the mirrors aren't yet updated.) sheol writes of the new 2.4.6 release: "Yep, it's out there. Run, jump, dance in the streets. Drink and be merry. Prepare yourself for a full kernel recompile." Reader dschl says: "Looks like fixes to the Reiserfs bugs in 2.4.5 are included." Here's the changelog as well.

cyberkreiger was among many to submit that Slackware 8.0, the distribution that just won't die, has just been released. I'm sure many people here started w/ Slackware back in the day and I'm glad to see it keep moving. You can read the Changelog or the Freshmeat project page. It'll probably be awhile before enough mirrors have caught up to settle demand, so please be patient. And congrats to Patrick and the rest. If it wasn't for your work back in the day, I may never have started using Linux.

Peter Makholm writes: "Finally the 1.0 version of the Linux Standard Base released. Now software vendors can finally just say that they comply with the standard and then you should be able to use the software on any Linux whether you uses Debian, TurboLinux or Open Linux. Check the standard at linuxbase.org."

Markus Kuhn writes: "Linux and other Unices are well on the way of making UTF-8 their single main character encoding. Replacing ASCII with UTF-8 is now one of the hottest Linux developer topics. Soon gone will be the annoying restrictions that Latin-1 imposes currently on even English language Linux users (no en/em dashes, no smart quotes, no math symbols, etc.). Counted are the days of the bewildering number of different regional ASCII extensions such as ISO 8859-1/2/3/5/7/9/13/15, KOI8-R/U, GBK, CP1251, VISCII, TIS-620, EUC-JP/KR, SJIS. Pioneered by the fathers of Unix in Plan 9 a decade ago, the ASCII-compatible UTF-8 encoding of Unicode / ISO 10646 (UCS) has emerged as the final way-to-go out of the current character-set chaos. With glibc 2.2.x and XFree86 4.x, the basic infrastructure for UTF-8 support is now well in place. To get started, read the UTF-8 FAQ and look at some of the UTF-8 example files listed there with xterm, emacs, vim, etc. Then think about whether running in a UTF-8 locale and using UTF-8 files, filenames, terminals and stdin/stdout has any consequences for software that you use or maintain. Join the linux-utf8 mailing list if you need advice. In two years from now, it should be possible to recommend every Linux user to switch over to UTF-8 permanently."

A reader writes " Looking for an xmms-kde RPM, I've stumbled across rhcontrib.bero.org - looks like Red Hat is building up a new contribution area. Looks quite interesting, but sloow."

Deven Phillips asks: "I have been using Linux-Mandrake for quite a while now, and I wanted to know what Slashdotters think of the two rival package management systems available for Mandrake: apt and urpmi. I have been playing with both (apt is available in the Contribs section), and I have to say that so far urpmi is winning. I have always heard that apt-get is the best, so I am surprised by my conclusions. Am I missing something? Is apt for RPM not as mature as the deb counterpart?" I, for one, would have liked to have heard the reasons as to why Deven feels that urpmi is superior, but maybe there are a few of you out there who feel the same way, that can communicate this as well as he can. For those of you who have tried both, what features do you like out of the two of them, and which tool serves your needs the best?

Matt Dugan returns an old question to the forefront: "I am building a Linux-based 'media box', which will sit alongside the TV, Stereo, VCR, etc.. My goals are to play DVD's, MP3s/Oggs, CD's, VCD's, and the occasional Divx AVI. Though DVD support isn't perfect, I expect it to be well on it's way by the time I get everything set up and running the way I want, but my problem lies here: I want to be able to do 'real-time' video capture to an IBM Desktar 60GXP 30GB drive via a Pinnacle DC10+ MJPEG PCI card. Has anyone else successfully configured such a beast?"

Pants Ripper writes: "In a victory for all Linux users, Linus Torvalds declared jihad on annoying 'informational' kernel boot messages. I'm sure we'll all miss the inspirational 'spewtron driver 0.09 installed (C)2000 by Wardwick Extrusion' messages in our dmesgs." I've always thought those messages looked pretty interestingly verbose, but people want pretty boot-ups. And this Linus guy seems to know a lot about this "Lee-nuks," too.
