Greg Kau is looking for answers to this particular question: "I am building a small group of low-powered computers. I would like to use the IDT C6 Winchip *despite* its low FPU and, uh, suggestive name. I am curious as to the "compatibility" of the C6 Winchip with Linux and BeOS. Has anyone tried this configuration out? The IDT site claims that Linux has been extensively tested with the C6, but I would just like to know first hand if anyone has tried compiling the kernel, etc... on the C6. Also if anyone has run BeOS on it, I would be grateful if you would comment on your experiences."

Samantha Bonsak would like to query you all on this issue: "I'm trying to find information reflecting the use of Linux within the corporate marketplace; who is using it and for what purpose. I've been hovering around the Slashdot site for a while and haven't seen any links or references regarding this. Can you point me in the right direction?" For the most part, I think that if Linux is being used in the average corporate workplace, then it is done so on the sly, but it would be interesting to know what other corporations are actively supporting Linux (aside from the usuals like IBM, Intel, Caldera, Corel and Netscape...) - Is there a way to get such information?

Troy Jacobson writes in with this dilemma: "I'm facing what could be the start of a migration to NT. One major app that has been desired is Exchange, so that people could use some advanced features of Outlook (e.g., the shared calendar and contact management). Do any alternatives to Exchange exist that run on Linux?" Now I don't know if any single solution exists, but isn't there a suite of apps for Linux one can run to achieve something close to Outlook's functionality?

An Anonymous Coward wrote in to tell us that Metrowerks has announced CodeWarrior for Linux. It's not yet on their website, but he got it through PointCast. It'll be released in Spring 1999 and costs $449. (Students get it for $119). Given the copyright on the announcement, we cannot post the press release. Bob Young gave an interview to techweb in which he states that the Intel deal with Red Hat is not intended to give Red Hat a heads start over other Linux distributors. Ed: It would be great if Red Hat convinces Intel to make pre-announcement technology information available to the whole Linux development community. Rather like Cygnus, it appears that Red Hat does not depend on loans. This is good, and hopefully their prudent strategy will mean that if they IPO they'll keep 51% of their stock so that they cannot be bought out (and killed).

Josh Baugher sent us a link to a Linux Gazette article called The Proper Image for Linux. And he says "Here is a great article. The author took a survey of all of the current kernel contributers. Asked them about their education, experience, current use, motivations and quality. Very interesting read. " Hopefully this will do much dispell the immature hacker myth that seems to be floating around out there.

Microsoft's understanding of Intel and Netscape's recent investment in Redhat is atypically dumb. Ed Muth, enterprise marketing group manager for NT, believes that because there is no proprietary IP in Linux (GPL oblige) "there is no reason to stay in the market". Given that Microsoft is built on marketing and some level of support, I have difficulty believing this statement is anything but FUD or some smoke-screen. The article goes on to a legal-expert who seems to believe that applications use linux source code. Thanks to Dan Speers.

Bob Young, head of Redhat, gave an interview to news.com today. Apparently, Red Hat will now gain all Intel proprietary information at the same time as Microsoft does. It also believes that its new powerful friends will encourage MIS directors of large corporations to trust Linux. Moreover to further encourage this, it will be spending its newly won money on improving its support infrastructure. Ed: Given some other information I'm not at liberty to disclose, Redhat's support options may be on the verge of increasing vastly. However, there is no need for Redhat bashing since not only do they have a history of giving back, but moreover any improvements they make to Linux on the basis of proprietary information must be released with any product thanks to the GPL. Indeed, more support will only help establish Linux as a viable platform, as Marc Andresssen explains. Notice Linus' confidence in the availability of Linux apps in 3 to 5 years.

Pierce sent us a link to a story over at Yahoo where you can read about An UltraSparc version of Linux. Sun actually has some fairly inexpensive ultra's these days. And this company will apparently build UltraSPARC Linux boxes for you. Not bad.

Redhat has now announced that Intel, Netscape, Greylock and Benchmark Partners have invested in it. Intel wants to target ISPs with their Linux strategy. Intel will also be joining Linux International. It will be interesting to see in which way Red Hat will react to UDI given the discussion about it on the kernel list, summarized by Linux Weekly News. Informix is stepping up its Linux support with a ports of Dynamic Server (expected to ship by the first quarter of next year) and the Dynamic 4GL toolset (to ship within days). Plans are also being made to bring Universal Server to Linux. This turnaround in Informix' strategy is due to the realization that deep-pocketed corporate customers also use linux.

Richard Harmon writes in with this bit of networking trouble: "I'm trying to set up a linux firewall at my office, but I can't get the forwarding to work. I've tried ipportfw, but it acts like the packets don't match the masq' rules or something. I can't figure out a way to have the smtp, pop3, imap, x.400 and so on forwarded /through/ the firewall with NAT (network address translation).. I basically want my firewall to sit on the mail sever's old (outside) IP, and then when it recieves network traffic on that IP to forward it to our internal network (192.x.x.x). HELP!!!

Well, approximiatly 20 million of you folks submitted the latest Berst column about Linux, over at ZDNet. However, what has been intersting to read is the different submittors take on the article-some of them have embraced whole-scale, while others (myself included) just think that he's hedging his bets, and trying to straddle the fence.
